BGS provides the engineering, analytical, and management expertise that supports the next generation of renewable energy technologies for the U.S. and the world.

BGS is the prime contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) Mission Oriented Technical Services (MOTS) contract, which provides EERE strategic and operational planning, engineering, science, modeling, executive and community stakeholder engagement, and financial assistance support to EERE’s Renewable Power, Sustainable Transportation, and Energy Efficiency sectors’ mission offices to achieve the nation’s energy, security, environmental, and social justice goals.

BGS provides integrated planning support to develop strategic plans, road maps, Multi-Year Program Plans (MYPPs), and Annual Operating Plans (AOPs) across all EERE research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) mission offices including:

  • Renewable Power: Solar, Wind, Water, Geothermal
  • Sustainable Transportation: Hydrogen, Bioenergy, Vehicles
  • Energy Efficiency: Advanced Manufacturing, Buildings, Federal Energy Management, and State and Local Energy Efficiency
BGS scientists, engineers and technical professionals manage and support every aspect of Technology R&D programs including:
  • Drafting the Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) that drive the engagement of the nation’s clean energy Research, Design, Development, and Demonstration (RDD&D) infrastructure
  • Supporting the Merit Review and award of FOA-generated proposals
  • Conducting on-site and virtual project cost, scope, and baseline reviews
  • Assessing projects and preparing corrective actions to recover baselines
  • Preparing and submitting final project closeout documents
  • Submitting final project reports for publication
  • Providing subject matter expertise to help shape policy and the direction of national programs
  • Ensuring new clean energy technologies are cyber-resilient

Work Highlights

BGS supports EERE with all aspects of renewable energy R&D, from engineering and technical support to managing budget and compliance needs.

Wind Power Technology Office R&D Program Support

Develop Wind Market reports that detail trends in wind development, offshore wind, technology, cost, and performance, helping elected and business leaders decide on future wind energy R&D and investment.

Participation in DOE’s i2X Initiative

BGS staff participate in the leadership team for DOE’s Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X), created to collaboratively determine how to interconnect solar, wind, and energy storage with existing power grid technologies.

EERE GeoVision Development

Provided critical support to the development of GeoVision, EERE’s seminal geothermal industry roadmap. GeoVision used rigorous quantitative models to assess geothermal deployment potential.

WPTO Pacwave Project

Supported the engineering design, design review and assessment, regulatory agency coordination, and project planning and execution of the Water Power Technologies Office’s (WPTO) PacWave project.

Management of EERE PMC

Manage EERE’s Project Management Center and developed a new database and system tools for mission and operations to help EERE more efficiently and effectively manage the work.

Clean Energy Intern Program

Developed and funded the Clean Energy Intern Program to expand the clean energy workforce through historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and minority-serving institutions.

FEMA Advisory Support

Provided technical guidance to FEMA on building codes for photovoltaic (PV) structures to enable hardening future PV systems while keeping PV energy affordable.
